What Is a Solar Export Number and How Do You Get One?

Your customer wants to register for the Smart Export Guarantee. Their energy supplier is asking for an export number. Here's exactly what that is and how to get it.

What Is a Solar Export Number?

An export number — sometimes called an export MPAN — is a unique reference number issued by the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) when a solar system is approved to export electricity to the grid.

It's separate from the standard import MPAN (the meter reference number already associated with the property). The export number specifically identifies the export connection and is required by energy suppliers to set up export tariff payments.

Why Does Your Customer Need an Export Number?

To register for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), energy suppliers require proof that the solar system is legitimately connected to the grid with export approval from the DNO. The export number is that proof.

Without it, your customer cannot register for SEG and won't be paid for the electricity they export. For many homeowners, SEG income is part of the financial case for going solar — so not having the export number ready can cause frustration and complaints after installation.

How Is an Export Number Different from an MPAN?

Import MPAN

Every property in the UK already has one. A 21-digit number that identifies the electricity supply point. Exists before you do anything.

Export Number

A separate identifier created only when a solar system is approved to connect and export. Not all solar installations have one — only those with proper DNO approval.

If a system is installed without export connection approval (which would be non-compliant), no export number exists and your customer cannot register for SEG.

When Is the Export Number Issued?

The DNO issues the export number as part of the grid connection approval process. For G98 notifications, it's typically issued alongside the acceptance confirmation. For G99 applications, it comes with the formal approval letter.

In some cases, there can be a short delay between approval and the export number being issued. We track this and make sure it reaches you as soon as it's available.

How Long Does It Take to Get an Export Number?

G98 notifications (smaller domestic systems)

Export number usually received within 24–72 hours of submission.

G99 applications

Depends on the DNO and complexity. Simple residential G99 jobs: 10–15 working days. More complex jobs may take longer.

What to Do If the Export Number Hasn't Arrived

If your customer's DNO application was submitted some time ago and you haven't received an export number, the most likely causes are:

  • The application hasn't been processed yet — common with backlogs at certain DNOs
  • There was an issue with the application that caused a delay
  • The export number was issued but not passed on correctly

Chasing the DNO directly can be time-consuming. If you used our service, we handle all follow-up on your behalf and will flag any issues before they become a problem for your customer.
