What G98 covers
ENA Engineering Recommendation G98 governs micro-generation connecting at or below 16A per phase. In practice:
- Single phase: up to roughly 3.68kW
- Three phase: up to roughly 11.04kW
The threshold is measured on inverter output, not panel capacity. A 4.5kWp array on a 3.68kW inverter is a G98 job. A 3.6kWp array on a 5kW inverter is not — that's G99.
Add a battery and the assumption usually breaks. Storage counts as generation, and the combined inverter rating is what the operator assesses.
The 28 day window
G98 is connect and notify. You don't wait for permission and there is no assessment period to schedule around. You install, commission, and the notification has to reach the network operator within 28 days of commissioning.
That deadline is the whole risk profile of G98. Nothing blocks the install, so nothing forces the paperwork, and it slides. A notification filed late is a breach of the connection agreement, and for MCS-certified installers it's a compliance issue with your certification body as well.
What a G98 notification needs
Site and supply
- Full install address and postcode
- Import MPAN
- Phase configuration
- Any existing generation on site
Equipment and commissioning
- Inverter manufacturer and model
- Rated output in kW and A per phase
- G98 type test certificate reference
- Total array capacity in kWp
- Commissioning date
The type test certificate reference is the item that most often bounces a G98. Inverter firmware revisions supersede certificates, so a reference that was valid last year may not be valid now.
The export MPAN comes after
Filing the notification isn't the end of it. The export MPAN follows separately, typically within a few weeks, and your customer can't register for the Smart Export Guarantee until it lands. Some operators issue an acceptance email instead, which the customer's supplier then uses to request the export MPAN.
Either way, someone has to watch for it. Until it arrives the customer is exporting for free, and that's usually when they ring you.
